DeFi Degens

What Are DeFi Degens?

DeFi Degens is a subculture linked with a shady segment of decentralized finance notorious for pump and dump operations. Several of the most significant new projects in the financial services field are based around DeFi, which is famously regarded as the next frontier for cryptocurrencies and finance in general.

However, another component of DeFi is concerned with chaotic, unregulated cryptocurrency initiatives that walk the line between humor and scam. These projects are the perfect habitat for the DeFi degens subculture.

Exploring the Concept of DeFi Degens

Degens assemble in private Telegram and Discord channels, where they exchange information about new DeFi initiatives that they believe will create cash or simply be entertaining. For several degens, decentralized finance is a chance to generate initiatives that are hybrids of monetary ventures and enormous multiplayer online games.

These take the form of enigmatic and unpredictable tokens, such as the ill-fated Yam, which is now the DeFi degen's totem. Unfortunately, these projects are unregulated, unaudited, and reliant on obscure rules that are frequently incomprehensible to anybody other than those who wrote the code.

A Comprehensive Example

Yam, for instance, featured new token dumps every 12 hours, before which users would hurriedly increase the token's value before withdrawing their earnings. Participants who do not understand the way these DeFi initiatives work is likely to be burned, but degens consider them enjoyable and rewarding activities that also allow them to push the limits of the crypto code and the borders of tolerance within the crypto community.

DeFi degens are strongly related to the pump and dump tendency, in which trash coins are pushed up through private forums and channels before being abandoned or forced to collapse — but not before degens have profited.
