What Is a Whitelist?

A whitelist is a list of permitted and verified individuals, organizations, computer programs, and even bitcoin addresses. Whitelists are typically associated with a specific service, event, or even piece of information. As a result, depending on the context, whitelists might have different meanings. 

For example, when users sign up for a company's mailing list, they are frequently asked to add the company's email address to their whitelist so that communications do not get up in users' spam folders. In some situations, businesses may pay money to have their emails whitelisted through Internet service providers so that they are not automatically labeled as spam. Users can ensure that future emails will enter their inbox by whitelisting an email address.

Whitelists can also be employed to improve network security. Local area networks (LANs), for example, can create a list of authorized MAC addresses to prevent unauthorized access. Likewise, wireless internet routers can employ whitelists to restrict Internet access to just known users. 

Aside from that, whitelisting may refer to a list of computer programs that are regarded safe to use. Many antivirus programs have a predetermined list of trustworthy applications that will not be attacked during system scans, although users can also construct their own whitelists. 

Lastly, in the cryptocurrency and blockchain world, whitelists are either associated with Initial Coin Offering (ICO) events or with withdrawal addresses. In the first example, cryptocurrency projects may provide a whitelisting phase for investors who wish to take part in the public sale of their tokens. 

As a result, any investor who wishes to participate in the ICO must first disclose their personal details before even being whitelisted. In terms of withdrawal addresses, a whitelist is a list of cryptocurrency addresses that users deem trustworthy. In that instance, they only would be allowed to transfer funds from their exchange account to the previously whitelisted addresses.
