What Is Non-Custodial?

A non-custodial arrangement is a situation in which private keys are held personally by the user and are usually used in relation to wallets or exchanges. Non-custodial services are those in which monies or assets are not held or custodied by a platform or third party at any point throughout a transaction or service period. 

Rather, the entire operation (typically economic in nature) is carried out via trustless smart contracts, which are the sophisticated self-executing series of codes that enable blockchain networks. On the contrary, custodial services take custody of a user's funds or assets for safekeeping, management, and so on. Non-custodial services are regarded as the epitome of decentralization and independence from mediators. Therefore, Crypto supporters favor them over custodial services because the latter is risky.

Difference Between Non-custodial and Custodial Services

Censorship, confiscation, insolvency, downtime,  additional processing time, complexity, and counterparty risk are the hazards associated with custodial services. Non-custodial services, on the contrary, are trustless, resistant to censorship, often faster, less complex, cannot be confiscated, and pose no chance of insolvency or downtime. 

Non-custodial wallet solutions provide users with complete ownership and control of their crypto assets via private keys and recovery seeds. Custodial services now offer a competitive advantage in restoration and security, allowing reputed centralized services to better assist users in the case of loss or malicious behavior because most of them are insured. 

Non-custodial services pose a smart contract risk, as defective or error-prone programming might be used to steal funds. Moreover, users frequently have no recourse if they lose their private keys or access to their accounts. Custodial services have far superior recovery alternatives available via identifying procedures because they limit access to their users' assets.
