What Is Gwei?
Gwei is the denomination used to define the cost of gas in Ether transactions. Gwei is a subunit of the Ether (ETH) cryptocurrency on the Ethereum network. A gwei or gigawei is 1,000,000,000 wei, Ether's smallest base unit. One gwei is equivalent to 0.000000001 or 10-9 ETH.
In contrast, 1 ETH equals 1 billion gwei! Gwei is a suitable denomination for calculating gas costs (payments made to miners for transaction processing). Gwei is also known as "shannon," after Claude Shannon, a scientist and cryptographer known as "the founder of information theory."
Ether (ETH) contains additional base units, each named after an influential individual whose work has aided the project. Gwei is also known as nanoether—the word nano denotes one billionth of anything. Several cryptocurrencies have high fiat currency exchange rates that require very small denominations.
These micro-denominations enable a cryptocurrency's market value to rise as far as supply and demand will allow while still allowing for smaller transactions. Gwei is the most often used ether unit since it is used to represent "gas" costs. In the Ethereum network, transaction power is referred to as gas.
To complete a transaction, you must provide it with gas, which charges gwei. Users must pay gas fees to miners and validators to accommodate them for the computational resources needed to process and verify transactions on the Ethereum blockchain.
Denominations of Ether
- Wei (wei): After Wei Dai, who developed the concepts that underpin all modern cryptocurrencies and is best known as the originator of Bitcoin's forerunner, B-money.
- Kwei (babbage): The first automatic computing engines were designed by Charles Babbage, a mathematician, philosopher, inventor, and mechanical engineer.
- Mwei (lovelace): The first algorithm was written and published by Ada Lovelace, a mathematician, writer, and computer programmer.
- Gwei (shannon): After Claude Shannon, the inventor of information theory and an American mathematician, cryptographer, as well as crypto-analysis master.
- Twei (szabo): Nick Szabo is a computer scientist, legal scholar, and cryptographer best recognized for his groundbreaking work in digital contracts and digital currency.
- Pwei (finney): Hal Finney, a computer scientist and cryptographer, was one of the early developers of Bitcoin and is said to be the very first human to acquire a bitcoin from Satoshi Nakamoto, Bitcoin's named founder.
- Ether (buterin): Ethereum was established by Vitalik Buterin, a programmer and writer.
