What is a crypto wallet?

A crypto wallet is a digital tool that helps you manage the keys that provide access to your assets on the blockchain. The wallet does not store the coins themselves, but rather the keys that allow you to send and receive them.

Definition of a crypto wallet

A wallet serves as a means of accessing cryptocurrencies recorded on the blockchain. When you own Bitcoin or another cryptocurrency, ownership is recorded on the network. What you actually need is the key that allows you to control these assets.

A wallet uses two types of keys. The public key is like an account number and can be used to receive coins. The private key, on the other hand, is like a password and must never be shared with anyone.

If a user loses their private key or recovery phrase, they may lose access to their assets. Therefore, managing your wallet and securing its data are among the most important security measures in cryptocurrency.

How does a cryptocurrency wallet work?

When receiving coins, you share your wallet address with the sender. This address is a shortened version of your public key. It can be shared to receive payments, but it does not grant others the right to use your assets.

When sending coins, the wallet uses your private key to sign the transaction. This signature proves that you are authorized to carry out the transaction. The network then verifies the transaction and records it on the blockchain.

A simple example: if you send Bitcoin to a friend, you enter their wallet address. After the network verifies the transaction, ownership of the funds is transferred to the new address. However, the funds can only be spent using the private key associated with that address.

Types of cryptocurrency wallets

Wallets are typically divided into hot wallets and cold wallets.

Hot wallets are connected to the internet, such as mobile apps or browser wallets. They are suitable for daily use and frequent trading, but require strong protection for both the device and the account.

Cold wallets store private keys without a constant internet connection. They may be physical devices or carefully stored paper copies. They are suitable for long-term storage but are less convenient for daily use.

There is also an important distinction between custodial and non-custodial wallets. In a custodial wallet, a trusted platform manages your keys on your behalf. In a non-custodial wallet, you have full control over your keys and are responsible for keeping them safe.

Related term: a "private key" is the secret code that proves your ownership and allows you to sign transactions.
