Market Capitalization

What Is Market Capitalization?

Market Capitalization is the entire capitalization of the price of a cryptocurrency. It is one method of ranking the apparent size of a cryptocurrency. Also known as market cap, it depicts the total worth of a cryptocurrency when all of its coins are combined together.

It is frequently used to measure certain cryptocurrencies' prominence and attractiveness. Market cap can be calculated by multiplying the price of a single coin by the number of coins in circulation.

This means that a market cap, like the price of a cryptocurrency, can be extremely volatile and fluctuate on an hourly basis. Large-cap cryptocurrencies with a market cap of more than $10 billion are seen as safer cryptocurrency investments. That isn't to suggest they aren't volatile. Some argue that large-cap cryptocurrencies can even serve as a safe haven, but others disagree.

Understanding Market Capitalization Through an Example

For example, if Xyz Company is trading at $30 per share and has one million outstanding shares, and its market capitalization is $30 million ($30 x 1 million shares). Because the market price of a publicly traded company's shares changes with every passing second, so does the market cap.

The number of outstanding shares can alter over time as well. It is important to note that changes in the number of outstanding shares are infrequent, and the figure only changes when the company takes definite corporate actions, like issuing additional shares through a secondary offering, exercising employee stock options (ESO), issuing/redeeming other financial instruments, and perhaps buying back its shares which can be done through a share repurchase program.

Different Types of Market Capitalization

Mega Cap: Companies having a market capitalization of $200 billion or more are considered mega-caps. They are the largest publicly traded corporations in terms of market capitalization and often represent the leaders of a specific industry area or market. This category is only open to a small number of businesses.

Large Cap: Large-cap companies have a market capitalization ranging from $10 billion to $200 billion. Blue chips are large-cap and mega-cap stocks that are believed to be relatively steady and secure. However, there is no guarantee that these companies will keep their stable valuations because all businesses face market risks.

Mid Cap: Mid-cap equities have market capitalizations ranging from $2 billion to $10 billion, and they are regarded as more volatile than large-cap and mega-cap corporations. Growth stocks account for a sizable share of mid-caps.

Small Cap: Small-cap companies have a market capitalization ranging from $300 million to $2 billion. While the majority of the companies in this category are relatively young and may have good growth potential, the list also includes a few established old organizations that may have lost their value in recent years for a wide variety of reasons.

Micro Cap: Micro-cap companies are largely penny stocks; this group includes companies with market capitalizations ranging from $50 million to $300 million. While such companies have a significant upside potential if they thrive, their negative potential is equally as big if they fail totally. Investments in these kinds of companies may not be suitable for the faint of heart and will necessitate more due diligence.

Nano Cap: Beyond micro-caps, nano-caps are yet another high-risk, high-reward layer. Market capitalizations for nano-cap enterprises are less than $50 million. These are the riskiest enterprises, and the possibility for profit varies greatly. These equities are often traded on the pink sheets or the Over-the-Counter Bulletin Board (OTCBB).
