ERC-20?

What Is ERC-20?

ERC-20 is the technological standard for exchangeable tokens issued on the Ethereum blockchain. The Ethereum blockchain serves as the foundation for ERC-20 tokens. They can even be used to make purchases, like significant cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, or swapped for fiat currency and crypto.

These assets typically have a limited supply and can be held in an Ethereum wallet. Throughout the initial coin offering boom in 2017 and 2018, a wide variety of ERC-20 tokens were developed. They typically serve as the foundation for decentralized apps, abbreviated as DApps. ERC-20 enables the exchange of various smart-contract capable tokens.

Tokens, in this context, are a representation of a non-unique asset, right, ownership, accessibility, cryptocurrency, or anything that may be transferred. Tokens indicating one of these factors and smart contracts are permitted to be traded for tokens representing another. Smart contracts are code conditions that execute various portions of a transaction between participants.

How the ERC-20 Came Into Being

In 2015, smart contracts were growing more popular, but there were some concerns that had to be resolved. Many tokens were being made because anyone could make them. Unfortunately, there was no way to guarantee that all of the various tokens could be produced, used, or exchanged.

Without a common token technique, each application would require its own token, and users would have to figure out the way to convert them back and forth across the hundreds of apps being produced.

Fabin Vogelstellar, a developer, introduced ERC-20 in 2015 as a mechanism to standardize tokens inside smart contracts on the Ethereum network. Vogelstellar posted the suggestion as an Ethereum Request for Comment on the project's Github page (ERC).

Because it was the 20th comment, it was given the code ERC-20. Following the Ethereum development community's procedure, the idea was approved and deployed in 2017 as Ethereum Improvement Proposal 20. (EIP-20).

Nevertheless, it is still referred to as ERC-20 because that is how it was regarded before it was approved. Since the request was accepted and implemented, smart contract tokens built on the Ethereum network must follow this standard if developers need them to be interchangeable.
