Delisting

What Is Delisting?

Delisting refers to the process of eliminating an asset/stock/cryptocurrency from a trading exchange. For example, it may be delisted when a project no longer matches the exchange's listing criteria. Delisting can occur for a variety of reasons, some of which are as follows:

  • Absence of frequent trading activity;

  • Lack of frequent trading activity;

  • Lack of protocol development;

  • Flawed network or smart contract reliability;

  • Lack of business-to-customer engagement;

  • Evidence of fraudulent or harmful activities.

The Way Delisting Works

Before a company may be listed on an exchange, it must first meet specific criteria known as "listing standards." Each exchange, like the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), has its own set of listing rules and regulations.

Companies that fail to reach an exchange's minimum requirements will be delisted involuntarily. The most common criterion is price. For example, a corporation with a share price of less than $1 per share for several months may face delisting.

Alternatively, a firm might apply to be delisted voluntarily. When a cost-benefit analysis reveals that the costs of being publicly traded outweigh the benefits, some companies prefer to go private. Requests to delist are frequently made when a company is purchased by a private equity firm and reformed by new shareholders.

These companies can petition for delisting and go private. In addition, when two or more listed firms consolidate and trade as a single company, the formerly distinct companies willingly request delisting.

Each project that is withdrawn from a trading platform has broken one or more of its regulations. In addition, these guidelines lack dedication to the project, lower trading volume, poor network security, evidence of illegal behavior, and a number of other factors that influence the platform’s delisting decision. To summarize, each trading platform has its own set of rules that must be followed in order to prevent being delisted.
