What Is Circulating Supply?

Circulating supply is the best estimate of the number of coins in circulation on the market and in possession of the general public. The number of cryptocurrency coins or tokens in distribution is a volatile value that can rise and fall over time. If a cryptocurrency is mineable, mining can generate new coins incrementally. 

In the instance of a centralized token, the creators can raise the supply at any time by immediate minting. The supply can also be reduced intentionally by burning coins, accidentally sending coins to an unrecoverable address, or losing accessibility to a wallet where funds are kept.

Understanding the Depth of Circulating Supply

The circulating supply is a concept of coins that are available to the general public and must not be confused with the total or maximum supply. The total supply is used to calculate the number of coins in circulation, which is the number of coins that have already been issued minus the ones that have been burnt. 

The entire supply is essentially the total of the circulating supply and the coins in escrow. On another note, the maximum supply quantifies the maximum number of coins that would ever exist, including coins that will be mined or released publicly in the future. 

An Example of Circulating Supply

For example, while the nominal circulating quantity of Bitcoin (BTC) must be over 18 million coins due to the number of Bitcoin produced since the network's creation, it is estimated that roughly 4 million BTC have been irreversibly destroyed, bringing the genuine circulating amount closer to 14 million. 

Furthermore, a cryptocurrency's circulating supply can be used to calculate its market capitalization, which is calculated by multiplying the existing market price by the number of coins in circulation. So, if a cryptocurrency has a circulating quantity of 1,000,000 coins that are traded at $5.00 each, the market cap is $5,000,000.
