Astroturfing
What is Astroturfing?
Astroturfing is a term that describes the deceptive practice of concealing the sponsors of a message, with the aim of making a coordinated political, commercial, or institutional campaign appear to be a spontaneous grassroots movement.
The concept of Astroturfing
Astroturfing is an attempt to create the impression of widespread public support for a policy, person, or product, when in fact such support is minimal. Multiple online identities and fake advocacy groups are used to mislead the public into believing that the astroturfer's position is the prevailing opinion, in order to steer public opinion toward a specific product or person. The concept of media disinformation falls within the fields of social engineering and social psychology. Although this practice has recently been associated with online social media, its use dates back to the widespread proliferation of newspapers and printing.
Media disinformation in the world of cryptocurrencies
The concept of media disinformation is widespread within the cryptocurrency community, particularly in support of obscure projects or those with frivolous or satirical purposes. This concept is regularly used to draw attention to initial coin offerings (ICOs), as platforms like Telegram and Discord provide access to a large segment of cryptocurrency traders and users. Furthermore, there are dozens of marketing firms that specialize almost exclusively in managing stealth marketing campaigns specifically designed to support cryptocurrency projects.
Related term: "social engineering" is a term that refers to the psychological manipulation of people to induce them to perform actions or disclose confidential information.
