What Is Offline Storage?

Offline storage is the practice of storing cryptocurrency in non-internet-connected equipment or systems. It refers to storing an account's private keys and funds in an offline gadget, which does not maintain a steady and ongoing connection with the internet. 

This is carried out to avoid unauthorized and/or malicious device accessibility, which could lead to theft or misuse of user funds. In addition, offline storage prevents attackers from reaching the device, making it practically impossible to steal critical and significant financial information.

Difference Between an Offline and an Online Storage

This is in contrast to online storage, which keeps data on devices with an active internet connection. Notwithstanding encryption and many other security measures, bad actors may still gain access to online storage private keys by circumventing or breaking security protections because the device could be attacked at any time. 

Offline storage devices still come online for a short time when transactions need to be transmitted to the network. Many go offline as quickly as they are finished. As a result, cyber thieves cannot read the private key used to complete the transaction. CDs, USBs, and offline PCs are typical offline storage devices.
