Merged Mining

What Is Merged Mining?

Merged mining is the simultaneous mining of two or more cryptocurrencies without affecting overall mining performance. A miner can effectively leverage their processing resources to mine blocks on many chains at the same time by employing Auxiliary Proof of Work (AuxPoW).

Detailed Explanation of the Concept of Merged Mining

The underlying concept AuxPoW is that work completed on one blockchain can be used as valid work on another. The parent blockchain is the one that supplies the proof of work, while the auxiliary blockchain is the one that acknowledges it as valid. To accomplish combined mining, all of the cryptocurrencies involved must use the same algorithm.

For example, Bitcoin employs SHA-256, which means that nearly any other coin employing SHA-256 can be mined alongside Bitcoin - as far as the technical implementations are done correctly.

Furthermore, the parent blockchain is not affected much because it does not require any technical changes. On the other hand, the auxiliary blockchain must be built to receive and accept the work of the parent chain properly. Adding or deleting support for merged mining usually necessitates a hard fork.

Functions of Merged Mining

Theoretically, merged mining could be an attractive way for a small (low-hash) blockchain to boost its security by utilizing the hashing power of Bitcoin or some other larger chain. If enough miners agree to use combined mining, this could lower the likelihood of 51 percent attacks. Many developers, nevertheless, disagree with this notion, claiming that integrated mining creates a false sense of security.

The main reason is that a moderately large mining pool that is not very popular on Bitcoin might easily achieve 51 percent hashing power on the smaller chain. One counterpoint is that if the reward or motivation for mining an auxiliary chain is good enough, it will attract many more miners, lowering centralization and increasing security.
