What is an Initial Coin Offering?

An Initial Coin Offering (ICO) is a form of fundraising conducted directly by startups established to create a digital currency or digital asset.

Definition of an initial coin offering (ICO)

An initial coin offering is defined as a form of fundraising for cryptocurrency and crypto-asset projects by the companies that created them. Similar to an initial exchange offering (IEO), cryptocurrencies or tokens are offered for direct purchase by investors without the need for an intermediary platform.

How does an initial coin offering work?

After defining the cryptocurrency project concept, preparing the whitepaper, and specifying all details of the coin offering, including the price range and the amount to be raised, the company launches the coin. Then, the promotional campaign for the offering begins. Once the offering begins, interested investors purchase the offered cryptocurrency by paying with other cryptocurrencies and transferring them to the project's address. The new coins are then received in your online wallet. Afterward, the cryptocurrency startups apply to list their coin on cryptocurrency trading platforms.

Why do startups choose to offer initial coin offerings?

Startups opt for this offering due to the lack of regulatory restrictions imposed by cryptocurrency trading platforms, it also gives them complete freedom to determine the token supply and the specific price range for the offering.

Related term: an Initial Exchange Offering (IEO) is the process of launching cryptocurrency projects through a digital trading platform, similar to an initial public offering (IPO) of company shares on the stock market.
