Bid-Ask Spread
Bid-Ask Spread
What is the bid-ask spread?
The bid-ask spread is the difference between the bid price and the ask price of an asset, whether it is stocks, cryptocurrencies, or other assets, and represents the direct cost of trading.
Definition of the bid-ask spread
The bid-ask spread refers to the difference between the bid price (the highest price a buyer is willing to pay for the asset) and the ask price (the lowest price a seller is willing to accept for that asset), whether it's stocks or cryptocurrencies. This spread illustrates the difference in price between buyers and sellers. For example, if the bid price for an asset is $100 and the ask price is $110, the spread is $10.
How do traders and investors benefit from the bid-ask spread?
A narrow spread typically indicates high trading activity for the asset and a large number of buyers and sellers, which is known as high liquidity, while a wide spread indicates lower liquidity, which may make it difficult to enter or exit trades at a favorable price.
The spread also affects trading costs; traders who buy at the ask price and sell at the bid price lose the amount of the spread, so a narrow spread is best for active traders.
Related Term: "Trading Volume" is the total number of units of an asset, whether cryptocurrencies or stocks, traded over a specific time period, and traders use it to analyze momentum and anticipate price movements.
