ASIC resistance
What is ASIC resistance?
The term "ASIC-Resistant" refers to blockchains and mining algorithms designed to prevent specialized mining hardware from gaining a significant advantage over standard computers. The goal is to keep mining accessible to anyone using standard hardware, such as a central processing unit (CPU) or graphics processing unit (GPU), rather than allowing it to be dominated by expensive, purpose-built equipment. This contributes to the network's expansion by attracting more miners, which in turn leads to the network's decentralization and growth.
How does integrated circuit resistance work?
Integrated circuit resistance for applications relies on the use of mining algorithms that are difficult to optimize using specialized mining hardware, either by creating constant fluctuations in the required computing power or by designing mining processes that rely on the efficiency of CPUs or GPUs to handle them. This allows standard computers to participate in mining and prevents specialized mining hardware from gaining a significant advantage.
Related term: application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) are mining devices specifically designed for mining operations, featuring distinctive characteristics such as speed, energy efficiency, and compact size compared to standard computers.
