How does an API work?

An API facilitates communication between an application and a server by defining a set of rules for that communication, specifying how information is sent and received. The basic mechanism is that the application sends a request to retrieve information from a web server, which the API then processes. After receiving this request, the API in turn communicates with the web server to retrieve the requested information. The web server then returns the requested information to the API, which in turn communicates with the requesting application.
