Frequently asked questions
What is Tezos?
Tezos and its token (XTZ) are an open-source blockchain that supports Delegated Proof of Stake (DPoS), developed to support and run decentralized applications and smart contracts. The concept of Tezos was first proposed in 2014, and its mainnet launched in 2018. Since then, it has experienced strong growth and momentum, becoming a formidable competitor to the Ethereum network. The Tezos ecosystem is supported by numerous entities around the world, including the Tezos Foundation, a Swiss nonprofit organization responsible for initiatives aimed at raising awareness of the Tezos blockchain and encouraging its use.
How does the Tezos network work?
The Tezos blockchain was built to support Delegated Proof of Stake (DPoS), which is characterized by its ability to update itself autonomously without the need for a Hard Fork. Any new network upgrade goes through five stages: proposal submission, an initial voting process, review, a final voting process, and finally, the adoption of updates. XTZ token holders participate in voting on these updates, ensuring that network development occurs in a decentralized manner. Validators, known as “Bakers,” stake XTZ tokens to verify transactions and create new blocks in exchange for rewards, while users who do not wish to run a validator node can delegate their tokens to a validator to receive a portion of the staking rewards while retaining full ownership.
