What Is a Snapshot?
A snapshot is the ability to record the state of anything at a specific moment in time. For example, a snapshot in the cryptocurrency world is the process of recording the status of a blockchain at a particular block height. It is used to keep records of the amount and balance of token holders at any time.
A Traditional Snapshot
A storage snapshot was initially used to record a server’s data at the time of the snapshot. These were not done to duplicate data but mainly to get metadata that detailed the state of the information. These snapshots could only be saved on the device they were taken on or on a local server.
Live data used in application testing, like testing a new app or program or assessing new settings, can put systems at risk. System snapshots are commonly used for testing and development. They offer countless data clones, which lets developers work without affecting their regular system operations. Workflows can be programmed, tested, reiterated, and removed without extra storage. As a fast failsafe, snapshots let the developer roll the server back to an earlier point in case of an error.
Compared to a full system backup, which can take overnight, a snapshot is available in seconds and can be as many as needed. Snapshots are only supposed to be retained for a limited period, but if improperly managed, they can result in incredibly complex data storage issues and long consolidation processes.
Cryptocurrency Snapshots
A snapshot of the cryptocurrency blockchain records its status up to a specific block height. In addition, it copies the whole blockchain ledger and all addresses and their connected data.
It is a common practice in crypto airdrops to have frequent snapshots taken. The subsequent token distribution is based on the balances shown against each blockchain address during the snapshot period.
Snapshots act as a record keeper for every token holder's account balance at a specific time or a block height. Users can then move their funds after the snapshot without affecting their entitlement for the round of pay-out linked with the snapshot.
Snapshots are also helpful during blockchain hard forks as they record the block height for the main chain.
