What Is a Bitcoin ATM?
A Bitcoin ATM is a kind of automated teller machine (ATM) that allows users to purchase and sell Bitcoin. Bitcoin ATMs operate similarly to traditional cash dispensers, except that instead of seeing their bank account information, users are provided with a menu of alternatives for exchanging Bitcoin for cash.
Bitcoin ATMs that only give purchasing options are known as unidirectional, and those that offer both buying and selling options are defined as bidirectional. Behind the mechanisms, BATMs differ from traditional ATMs. Most crucially, they are not linked to the user's bank or a banking network.
They are, instead, internet-enabled terminals that enable users to interact with a particular exchange. Bitcoin ATMs that only give purchasing options are known as unidirectional, and those that offer both buying and selling options are defined as bidirectional.

The Emergence of the First Bitcoin ATM
The first Bitcoin ATM is thought to have been installed in 2013 at a coffee shop within the Canadian city of Vancouver. There are expected to be 2,500 BATMs in the United States by 2020. They are most commonly seen in transportation hubs like airports and train stations, as well as specialized stores and cafes.
To install a BATM in a commercial building, the owner will sign a contract with a BATM supplier who will manufacture and, if applicable, install the device on-site. Some vendors supply unidirectional and bidirectional hardware, whereas others provide extra services such as vouchers and client retention programs.
Although Bitcoin ATMs are becoming increasingly popular, they have been chastised for charging users exorbitant transaction fees. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau of the US issued an official consumer warning about fees and exchange rates. Meanwhile, other countries, notably Canada and the United Kingdom, have launched tax investigations into Bitcoin ATM operators.
