What is an ICO?
An Initial Coin Offering (ICO) allows new crypto projects to raise funds by selling tokens to investors, similar to how IPOs work in traditional markets. ICOs offer early access and potential rewards, but investors should research carefully to avoid risks.

An Initial Coin Offering (ICO) is a fundraising method for new crypto projects. Similar to an Initial Public Offering (IPO) in traditional stock markets, where a company sells shares to the public for the first time, an ICO involves selling project tokens. These tokens are exchanged for either money or established crypto assets like Bitcoin (BTC) or Ethereum (ETH).
How does ICO work?
In the initial stages, the new crypto project would publish its whitepaper, which is a document containing the idea behind the project, its goals, as well as details about the supply of the tokens, their use cases and the way they will be distributed.
As investors gain interest in the new project, they start to purchase tokens for a discounted or fixed price. This is called the ICO period. As the new project gains momentum, the tokens would then be distributed or listed on crypto exchanges for a wider range of traders.
The nature of ICOs helps build a community to surround the new project, and early investors get to become active members of this community who will continue to support the project as it grows.
Benefits and potential risks
As mentioned above, ICOs provide early access to investors. This often means that the tokens will be offered at cheaper prices. In return, if the project is successful, these tokens’ value will likely increase significantly.
On the other hand, and as with any investment, some of the projects end up failing and some never deliver a working product. This is why it’s important to always research the project and the team behind it, to look into its proposed roadmap as well as the token’s utility before investing.
In short, ICOs open the door for early supporters to be part of new and promising crypto projects from the very beginning. All you need to do is research to get involved in the coin’s journey.
