Understanding NFTs and how they work

NFTs, or non-fungible tokens, represent ownership of unique digital assets like art, music, and collectibles. Using blockchain technology, NFTs record ownership and transaction history transparently. Before investing, always research and stay aware of the risks and volatility of the NFT market.

NFTs, or non-fungible tokens, are a special type of digital asset that represent ownership or proof of authenticity for something unique like art, music, collectibles, or even in-game items.

Fungible or non-fungible tokens?

For cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin or Ethereum, every coin or token of the same type holds equal value, which makes them fungible. On the contrary, each NFT is completely unique. For example, one NFT might represent a digital artwork, while another could represent a video clip or collectible card, which makes them non-fungible tokens (NFTs for short), each with its own individual value and characteristics.

How do NFTs work?

NFTs use blockchain technology (most commonly Ethereum) to store information about ownership and transaction history. When an NFT is created (a process known as minting) a smart contract records details like who owns it, its unique ID, and its associated digital file.

An NFT can represent almost anything digital: images, videos, music, virtual real estate, in-game assets, or even event tickets. It’s not always the file itself that’s stored on the blockchain, but a record or link (called a metadata file) that points to where the actual digital item is located, such as on a secure external server or decentralized storage system (like IPFS). This record proves that you own or have rights to that specific version of it, in whole or in part. NFTs are typically bought and sold through online marketplaces using crypto, such as Ethereum or other supported tokens. Each transaction is recorded on the blockchain, ensuring transparency and traceability of ownership.

As always, approach NFTs with caution and make sure to educate yourself before diving in and verify sources to prevent yourself from falling for scams, and to be aware of the high volatility associated with the NFT market.
