What Is Web 2.0?

Web 2.0 depicts the present state of the internet, which contains more user-generated information and usability for end users than Web 1.0. Web 2.0, in general, refers to the twenty-first-century Internet applications that altered the digital world. 

Web 2.0 doesn't really apply to any specific internet technological advancements. It refers specifically to a transformation in how people utilize the internet in the twenty-first century. There is a greater level of sharing of information and connection among people in the new age. This new version allows consumers to participate in the experience actively instead of simply watching and absorbing information.

Basic Differences Between Web 1.0 and Web 2.0

The term "Web 1.0" refers to the initial stage of the Internet. During this time, there were very few content creators; the majority of Internet users were consumers. Dynamic HTML, which integrates interactive and animated websites with specialized coding or language, was more common. 

This stage's content was obtained from a server's filesystem or a database management system. Users could sign online guestbooks and send HTML forms through email. The term "Web 2.0" initially appeared in 1999, as the Internet began to shift toward a system that proactively engaged the user. 

Users were motivated to contribute content rather than simply consuming it. People could now write articles as well as comments; then, it became feasible to register user profiles on many sites, expanding involvement. Web 2.0 has spawned web apps, self-publishing platforms such as WordPress, and social media sites. 

The social side of the Internet has undergone a significant change; in general, social media enables users to participate as well as interact with each other by sharing thoughts, views, and opinions. Users have the ability to tag, share, tweet, and also like.

However, there are numerous drawbacks to the Internet operating very much like a public discussion. A spike has been observed in online stalking, cyberbullying, doxing, identity theft, and many other online crimes as social media has grown. There is also the risk of individuals propagating disinformation, whether through open-source information-sharing sites or social media.
