Pre-Mine

What Is a Pre-Mine?

Pre-mining is the act of generating new cryptocurrency coins before making the currency available to the public. The term "pre-mine" can also refer to the block rewards developed and given to miners before the public can mine the block. Pre-mining can be used to finance the development of a new cryptocurrency and to ensure that the early investors in the project have a stake in the currency. It can also generate funds for future growth, marketing, and other expenses.

Pre-mining can be seen as a way to distribute new cryptocurrencies more centrally, as the currency's creators will have a large portion of the total supply. Depending on your perspective, this can be seen as an advantage or disadvantage. Some people see pre-mining as a way to ensure that the early investors in a project have skin in the game. Others see it as a way to centralize power and control over the currency. Pre-mining can also generate funds for future development, marketing, and other expenses.

This is considered a plus point, as it allows the team behind a new cryptocurrency to raise funds without going through traditional VC or crowdfunding channels. However, it can also be seen as a disadvantage, as it gives the team a large amount of control over the supply of the currency.

Risk of Pre-Mining

Pre-mining is not without its risks. If a large portion of the total supply is pre-mined, it can centralize power and control over the currency. It can also be used to pump and dump the currency's price, as the team behind the project will have many coins they can sell on the open market.

Pre-mining can also create a negative perception of a project, as it can be seen as a way to make a quick profit rather than build a long-term, sustainable business. When considering an investment in a new cryptocurrency, you must do your due diligence and research the project thoroughly. This includes looking into the project's team, industry experience, and track record. In addition, it is necessary to look up the use case of the currency and whether or not it has a solid foundation. Finally, it is necessary to look into the pre-mine situation and ensure you understand the risks involved.

Example of Pre-Mine in Cryptocurrency

The launch of the Ethereum network in 2015 included a pre-mine of 72 million ETH. The ETH was distributed to the members of the Ethereum Foundation, which is a non-profit organization that supports the development of Ethereum. The remaining ETH was distributed to individuals and entities participating in the Ethereum presale. Ethereum's pre-mine helped to finance the development of the Ethereum network and ecosystem. It also gave the early investors in the project a stake in the currency. However, some have criticized the pre-mine as it has given the Ethereum Foundation and early investors significant control over the supply of ETH.
