Merkle Tree

What is a Merkle Tree in Blockchain?

A Merkle Tree is a data structure that uses hashes to efficiently organize and verify blockchain transactions. This structure helps the network validate transactions without having to examine every piece of data in the block.

Definition of a Merkle Tree

A Merkle Tree acts as a structured digital summary of many transactions within a single block. The process begins by calculating a hash for each transaction, then combining all the hashes together and calculating a new hash for them. This process continues upward until only a single hash remains, called the Merkle Root.

The Merkle Root represents all the transactions in the block as a single short value. Therefore, any small change in a single transaction alters its hash. Subsequently, every hash above it changes until the Merkle Root itself changes. In this way, detecting tampering becomes easier and faster.

How does a Merkle Tree work?

Suppose a block contains four transactions: A, B, C, and D. First, a hash is calculated for each transaction. Next, the system combines the hash of A with the hash of B, and the hash of C with the hash of D. This results in two new hashes, which the system then combines to obtain the Merkle Root.

The network does not need to load all the block data to verify a specific transaction. It is sufficient to use a short path of hashes to reach the Merkle Root. If the resulting root matches the root recorded in the block header, this indicates that the transaction exists and has not been altered.

Why is the Merkle Tree important in blockchain?

The Merkle Tree makes verifying transactions faster and lighter on the network. It reduces the amount of data required and helps wallets and nodes confirm the presence of a transaction within a specific block.

Networks like Bitcoin use this structure to maintain verification efficiency and link block data securely. Therefore, the Merkle Tree is an important part of the blockchain architecture, as it combines speed, accuracy, and security.

Related Term: Blockchain is the technology on which Merkle trees rely to organize data within blocks.
