Initial Token Offering

What is an Initial Token Offering (ITO)?

The cryptocurrency world consists of different offerings, like an initial dex offering (IDO) and an initial exchange offering (IEO). Another example of an offering is an initial token offering, similar to an initial coin offering. The two acronyms are used interchangeably, although there are subtle distinctions between the two, which we will highlight below.

An ITO is not meant as a fundraising exercise for emerging tokens. Instead, the motive behind an ITO is to offer tokens that have either proven or unproven intrinsic value. For instance, giving investors access to the platform via a subscription is an excellent example of an ITO. In addition, the token holders will have access to exclusive content.

The focus of an initial token offering is on tokenization rather than crowdfunding. However, it is also pivotal to understand how a coin differs from a token, even if the two are synonymous. On the one hand, a coin is any cryptocurrency that functions on its blockchain, like Bitcoin or Ethereum. On the other hand, a token is a cryptocurrency that works on an existing blockchain, and its assets employ Ethereum's ERC-20 protocols.
