Confirmation Time

Confirmation time is the time passed between the time a blockchain transaction is sent to the network and the time it is officially recorded into a confirmed block.

What Is Confirmation Time?

Confirmation time is described as the time passed between the time a blockchain transaction is sent to the network and the time it is officially recorded into a confirmed block. In other words, it indicates the total amount of time a user must wait for their transaction to be gathered and confirmed by a miner node. Depending on what type of blockchain and network architecture, this time can also be lowered by charging a greater transaction fee, giving miners an incentive to prioritize your transaction.

Uses of Confirmation Time

However, the average pace of a blockchain network can be measured using confirmation time because the actual timeframe between submission and confirmation might vary owing to individual factors and variable demand.

It is more realistic to measure a blockchain's efficiency and speed by using an averaged confirmation time based on its present status and the most recent blocks. After a miner includes a transaction in a block, the block must be validated by the network's other nodes.

When a block is confirmed to be genuine, it is deemed to have a single confirmation, which means that any new block mined on top of it represents another confirmation. Since the most recent blocks in a blockchain are still not totally safe, it is often advised to wait for more block confirmations before declaring the transaction successful and irrevocable.

This case is especially true for cryptocurrency payment recipients, such as merchants and online service providers. The amount of confirmations required before a transaction is considered complete varies and is directly proportional to the processing capacity (hash rate) dedicated to safeguarding each blockchain network. For example, while Bitcoin users believe a minimum of 6 block confirmations to be highly secure, other chains with less strength would require substantially more.
