Bollinger Band Indicator

The Bollinger Band is a technical analysis indicator that measures the volatility of a market or asset and shows whether it is overbought or oversold. Developed by John Bollinger in the 1980s, it plots three lines around price that widen and narrow with market volatility.

What is the Bollinger Band indicator?

The Bollinger Band is an indicator used in technical analysis to measure the volatility of a market or asset and determine whether the asset is overbought or overvalued, or oversold and trading below its value.

The concept of the Bollinger Band

The Bollinger Band is a technical analysis tool used to measure the price volatility of an asset and gauge buying and selling momentum in a market index, cryptocurrency, or stock. This indicator was developed by John Bollinger in the 1980s. The indicator consists of three lines around the asset's price chart, where the middle line (Middle Average Band) indicates the 20-day simple moving average (SMA20), while the upper line indicates one standard deviation above the simple moving average, and the lower band represents one standard deviation below the average price movement. These standard deviations change dynamically with market volatility, widening during periods of high volatility and narrowing during periods of lower volatility, thereby confining price movements within a specific range.

How investors can benefit from the ask price in the markets

One of the most prominent and important uses of the Bollinger Bands indicator is its ability to identify situations of buying momentum or oversold conditions in an asset, When the price touches or exceeds the upper band, the asset is considered overbought, indicating a potential pullback as traders take profits, conversely, when the price touches or falls below the lower band, the asset is considered oversold.

Related term: Standard Deviation is a statistical measure that shows how far the numbers in a data set deviate from the average (Mean).
