Bitcoin Improvement Proposal

A Bitcoin Improvement Proposal (BIP) is a formal proposal to alter Bitcoin.

What Is a Bitcoin Improvement Proposal (BIP)?

A Bitcoin Improvement Proposal (BIP) is a formal proposal to alter Bitcoin. Bitcoin does not have a hierarchical or well-defined management structure. As a result, a widely accepted standard for introducing new concepts into Bitcoin was needed.

The first BIP was produced in 2011, outlining the form of the BIP and drawing influence from the Python language proposal system. Every BIP is open to the public on GitHub. Bitcoin Improvement Proposals are often classified into three types: Standards Track, Informational, and Process. Modifications to the protocols or verification methods are addressed in Standards Track BIPs.

Informational BIPs are intended to educate or raise awareness. Process BIPs have suggested improvements to processes outside of the Bitcoin protocol. The Bitcoin community can accept or reject informational BIPs as it sees fit. On the other hand, Standards Track and Process BIPs demand public consensus and must be taken into account.

BIPs have been through drafting or "triaging" process before reaching this stage, commencing with a draft that is either presented, rejected, withdrawn, or deferred. Following that is the active phase, which is accompanied by depreciation or renewal. Finally, most BIPs begin as debates on listservs or other online communities.

**An Example of a Bitcoin Improvement Proposal (BIP) **

BIP 141, often known as SegWit, advocated a soft fork to boost network capacity. Proposals for forks require a 95 percent majority among miners. Importantly, BIPs cannot be implemented. Even if the community agrees on a modification outlined in a BIP, every person makes their own decision about which codebase to use.

Furthermore, there is no way or willingness to control whichever edition of the code individual Bitcoin users use. Many improvements, such as changes to the user interface, do not require any BIP.

Understanding How Bitcoin Improvement Proposal (BIP) Is Created

Bitcoin is a completely open system. Anyone, irrespective of credentials or reputation, can propose a BIP. BIPs typically start as unofficial proposals on the Bitcoin mailing list or another communication channel, like IRC or Slack. A developer can send an email to the email list with their concept, so anyone who is engaged will react with input.

Some ideas continue in this discussion stage for many years because either the community cannot reach an agreement, the idea needs fine-tuning, or Bitcoin is not yet ready for the suggested modifications. After a proposal has been refined, it is granted a BIP number and uploaded to the Bitcoin Core GitHub BIP repository. The BIP is now official, although it has not yet been approved.
