What are altcoins?

Altcoins are a group that includes all digital currencies and other crypto assets, such as tokens, excluding Bitcoin. In some classifications, Ethereum may also be excluded. Each altcoin is backed by developers and has its own specific project.

Altcoins, short for "alternative coins," are called that because they are alternatives to Bitcoin. They are digital assets that mostly use the blockchain network for their operations and have consensus mechanisms different from Bitcoin's proof-of-work system. They typically offer features based on certain limitations found in Bitcoin, such as lower transaction fees, faster transfers, or smart contract applications like Ethereum, or price stability mechanisms such as those found in stablecoins.

Types of alternative cryptocurrencies:

• Payment tokens: designed to function as currency and a medium of exchange, such as Litecoin (LTC)

• Stablecoins: designed to minimize price volatility by pegging their value to real-world assets, such as Tether (USDT).

• Smart contract platforms: designed to build applications and smart contracts on a blockchain network, such as Ethereum (ETH) and Solana (SOL).

• Utility tokens: used for specific utility purposes within a given system, such as Binance Coin (BNB).

• Privacy coins: designed to support advanced encryption technologies to maintain confidentiality, such as Zcash (ZCASH).

• Meme coins: designed without a specific purpose and traded solely to follow internet trends, they are characterized by extreme volatility, such as Dogecoin (DOGE)

• Layer 2 tokens: designed to scale the blockchain and enable faster transaction processing, such as: Arbitrum (ARB).
