Cryptoasset

What Is a Cryptoasset?

A crypto asset is any digital asset that operates as a currency or decentralized application by utilizing cryptography technologies. Cryptoassets are digital assets that use encryption, consensus methods, distributed ledgers, peer-to-peer technology, and smart contracts to operate as a store of value, means of exchange, unit of account, or decentralized application (DApp).

Cryptoassets are classified into four types: cryptocurrencies, utility tokens, security tokens, and stablecoins. Cryptocurrencies are the most common of these: Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH), the two most significant assets by market capitalization within the crypto market, fall under this category.

Further Exploring the Concept of Cryptoassets

Cryptocurrencies are coins or totally independent assets that can be traded between network participants and rely on blockchain technology to function. A blockchain is a decentralized ledger of all the transactions conducted with a particular cryptocurrency that is maintained and updated using a consensus method such as proof-of-work or proof-of-stake.

Utility tokens aren't really coins in the traditional sense because they do not operate on their blockchain. However, they continue to use the blockchain of the parent platform, such as Ethereum or EOS (EOS).

Utility tokens are so named because they may be used to gain access to a certain product or service; for instance, Storj (STORJ) allows users to pay for the use of decentralized storage space on its network. Utility tokens can still be used to exchange value, but that is not their primary function.

Security tokens are crypto assets that draw their worth from other assets that may be traded, both physical and digital. Such tokens are subject to security rules such as those implemented by the Securities and Exchange Commission in the United States (SEC).

Finally, stablecoins are a sort of crypto asset whose value is linked to the value of a typical currency, like the US dollar or the Euro. Tether (USDT) and DAI are two examples of stablecoins (DAI).
