What is Peer-to-Peer (P2P)
P2P networks are often used for file sharing and other applications where decentralization is desired. In a P2P network, each node has equal status, and there is no central authority. Nodes are typically connected via the Internet. Each node on the P2P network act as a client and a server, making resources available to others on the network.
P2P networks are used for various purposes, including file sharing, distributed computing, telephony, and streaming media. The best-known example of a P2P network is the BitTorrent protocol, which is used for downloading files such as movies and music.
P2P networks have several advantages over traditional client-server architectures, including reduced costs, improved scalability, and increased resilience. However, they are also associated with disadvantages, such as security risks and potential abuse.
File Sharing: An everyday use of peer-to-peer technology is file sharing. File sharing platforms like BitTorrent allow users to share files directly with each other without the need for a central server. This decentralized approach is often more efficient than traditional file sharing, as it eliminates the need for a middleman.
Examples of P2P in Cryptocurrency:
Bitcoin is a decentralized P2P electronic cash system without a central server or trusted parties. The transactions that occur are thoroughly verified by network nodes through cryptography and recorded in public distributed ledger called a blockchain. Bitcoin was invented by an unknown person or group under Satoshi Nakamoto and released as open-source software in 2009.
Ethereum: Ethereum is a decentralized platform that enables the execution of smart contracts: applications that execute as intended, with no chance of fraud or third-party involvement. Ethereum is commonly used to build decentralized applications (DApps) and issues its cryptocurrency, ether. Ether is like fuel for running DApps on the Ethereum network.
Litecoin: Litecoin is a P2P Internet currency that enables fast, near-zero cost payments worldwide. Litecoin is an open-source, global payment network fully decentralized without any authorities. Mathematics ensures the network's security and empowers users to manage their money. Litecoin includes faster transaction confirmation speeds and higher storage efficiency than other math-based currencies. Litecoin is a tried-and-true means of exchange that complements Bitcoin with substantial industry support, trade volume, and liquidity.
Overall, P2P services have several advantages and disadvantages. They can be used for various purposes, both legal and illegal. And while they can have some drawbacks, they are often more efficient and resilient than traditional client-server systems.
