What Is a Chain Split?
Another name for cryptocurrency forks is chain splits, which refer to dividing a single initial coin into numerous independently maintained initiatives. Finally, software forks happen when developers clone the codebase of an existing project and start their independent development on top of it.
As a result, one or more unique projects are separated from the original "parent" project. Chain splits, also known as cryptocurrency forks, are coins whose codebase has been cloned from another earlier cryptocurrency and whose development proceeds independently of the parent coin's direction.
Understanding the Full Scope of a Chain Split
Because many cryptocurrencies, particularly in the early years of the market, were launched as open-source projects, it is frequently effortless to fork a project, for even a developer lacking the expertise to design their coin from scratch. Consequently, some of today's most valuable cryptocurrencies are forks or forks of multiple parent projects.
Chain splits can happen for a variety of different causes. Sometimes engineers consider that a cryptocurrency is promising in general but may benefit from some technical tweaks: this was the case with Litecoin (LTC), which separated from Bitcoin (BTC) to enable faster block generation time, a more significant total number of coins, and a different hashing algorithm.
Examples of Chain Splits
At times, chain splits are driven by differences in opinion, like in the case of Bitcoin Cash (BCH), which forked from Bitcoin due to opposing views on expanding the coin for a broader user base. Another case is Ethereum Classic (ETC), which split from Ethereum (ETH) over whether cryptocurrency developers should be permitted to modify data stored on the blockchain to return stolen money to their rightful owners.
A crypto fork can sometimes be a simple joke, such as Dogecoin (DOGE), a fork of Litecoin inspired by an online meme that attained a market valuation of more than $2 billion at one point.
