How to rebalance your portfolio?

Rebalancing helps crypto investors keep their portfolios aligned with their original goals despite price volatility. By adjusting asset allocations regularly or when thresholds are breached, investors can manage risk and lock in gains.

As you start your crypto trading journey, it becomes important to set your goals for your portfolio. But because crypto prices move quickly, your portfolio can shift away from the balance you planned for. This is where the concept of rebalancing comes in.

Rebalancing is the process of buying or selling assets in your portfolio to return to your target allocation. Rebalancing can happen regularly and helps you manage risk, lock in gains, and avoid being overexposed to one asset.

For example, let’s say that after measuring your risk, you set your portfolio target to be: 50% Bitcoin, 30% Ethereum, and 20% stablecoins. With prices swinging, if one coin increases in value, it will become a larger percentage of your portfolio than planned which can expose you to more risk than you intended. To rebalance your portfolio in this case, you can sell some of the coins and reallocate to other assets. On the other hand, if another asset falls below its target weight, you can buy more to bring it back up.

But when to know exactly when to rebalance? Well, considering the volatile nature of crypto, it’s better to set a rebalancing schedule (monthly, quarterly, yearly), or to decide a set of percentages (for example 5–10% off target) to signal you to rebalance a certain coin. Some platforms offer auto-rebalancing features, but you can also track manually using spreadsheets or apps. For beginners, a simple calendar-based approach works well.

Rebalancing helps you stick to your original investment plan, to steer away from market hype, and to lock in your profits. It also reduces your risk of exposure following sudden market downturns and ensures long-term growth.
