What are meme coins?

Meme coins are digital currencies inspired by internet memes, pop culture, or trends. Their popularity often depends on online communities and media hype, rather than a clear technical use case.

The definition of meme coins

Meme coins differ from projects like Bitcoin and Ethereum, as those networks were designed to solve specific problems, such as decentralized payments or smart contracts. Meme coins, on the other hand, often start as a joke or a social experiment.

These coins are characterized by playful names and images. They spread across platforms like X, Reddit, and TikTok. As a result, their prices can rise rapidly when a large community or an influencer engages with them.

However, popularity doesn't always mean real value. Many meme coins lack a clear practical use case. For this reason, they are among the most volatile and risky categories of cryptocurrencies.

How do meme coins work?

Meme coins generally work like any other digital asset. They are issued on a blockchain and can be sent and received via digital wallets. Some are built on existing networks, such as Ethereum or Solana, rather than creating an independent network.

A project may set a massive supply of the coin to keep the price per unit very low. This makes it seem easy for new users to buy. However, a low price per unit does not mean the coin is cheap or safe.

A simple example: Dogecoin started as a joke inspired by a picture of a dog. Later, Shiba Inu became one of the most popular cryptocurrencies thanks to its community's support and its viral spread online.

Why are meme coins considered high-risk?

Meme coin prices often depend on collective enthusiasm. They may rise rapidly due to a social media post. They may fall just as quickly if interest drops or market concerns arise.

There are also risks of fraud and low liquidity. Some projects may disappear after attracting buyers, in what is known as a "rug pull." It may also be difficult to sell certain coins if trading volume is low.

That's why you should approach meme coins with extreme caution. It's not enough for a coin to be popular or trending. What matters most is understanding the project, its liquidity, and the risks involved, and not making a decision based solely on hype.

Related term: A "rug pull" is a type of scam that occurs when developers abandon a project after raising funds from users.
