Fungibility is the ability of an asset or commodity to be exchanged for other assets or commodities of the same type or category, which facilitates trading and exchange between assets.

Definition of fungibility

Fungibility refers to the ability to exchange goods or assets without a change in their value, which facilitates exchange and trade. Fungible goods are typically produced in large quantities and are identical in quality and value. For example, one kilogram of wheat can be exchanged for another kilogram of wheat, and one liter of oil can be exchanged for another liter of oil. For this reason, one commodity or asset can be exchanged for another without any problem.

What is the concept of fungibility in cryptocurrencies?

Fungibility means that every unit of a given currency or token is identical and interchangeable with any other unit of the same digital currency. This property makes transactions easy and straightforward, as users do not need to evaluate each unit individually. For example, if you send someone 0.1 bitcoin, it does not matter which specific 0.1 bitcoin they send you, because both the dollar and bitcoin are examples of fungible assets. Despite this concept, non-fungible tokens (NFTs) emerge as a distinct type of asset that cannot be exchanged for another of the same kind.
