Allocation
Allocation
What is asset allocation?
Allocation is the process of distributing tokens among the various stakeholders in a blockchain project. Beneficiaries may include the project team, investors, strategic partners, the community, or users.
Definition of asset allocation in cryptocurrencies
The process of cryptocurrency asset allocation is defined as the share of a digital currency or token to be distributed to specific categories of stakeholders within the project as a form of commitment or reward for key project participants. Cryptocurrencies or tokens are also offered at a discounted price to early investors in the project through private rounds, subject to a lock-up period during which the sale of these assets is prohibited to avoid impacting the asset's price at the project's launch.
Why is the allocation process important for crypto-asset projects?
A thoughtful allocation of crypto-assets or tokens helps prevent the asset from becoming concentrated in the hands of specific individuals, as projects distribute tokens among various stakeholders, such as investors, team members, and the community. This prevents monopolization, control, and price manipulation of the asset by a minority with concentrated holdings. Additionally, for projects focused on governance, a balanced distribution ensures fairness, allowing for the representation of various interests within the project's community.
Related term: the "lock-up period" is the period during which founders, employees, or early investors are prohibited from selling the asset in order to prevent price manipulation.
