What Is a Honeypot?

A honeypot is a computer security technique that detects or prevents illegal access to information systems. Honeypots are smart contracts that seem to contain a design flaw that enables an unauthorized user to drain Ether (the native currency of Ethereum) from the contract if the user gives a specific amount of Ether to the contract upfront. When the user attempts to exploit this apparent defect, a second, yet undiscovered, trapdoor appears, stopping the Ether draining from happening.

How Does Honeypot Work?

The goal is for the user to focus solely on the visible flaw and disregard any indications that the contract contains a second vulnerability. Honeypot assaults work because people are routinely duped, just like in other types of fraud. As a consequence, people's avarice and assumptions make it difficult to measure risk. A honeypot functions in three steps:

The attacker employs a contract that seems vulnerable and lures it with money.

The victim attempts but fails to exploit the contract by transmitting at least the necessary amount of money.

The attacker takes the bait and the money the victim lost during the attempted exploitation.

An attacker does not require any special skills to set up honeypots with Ethereum smart contracts. An attacker possesses the same abilities as an ordinary Ethereum user. They need the money to set up and bait the smart contract.

In general, a honeypot process consists of a computer, applications, and data that simulate the behavior of the actual system that may be tempting to attackers, like the Internet of Things devices, banking systems, or public utility or transit networks.
