What Is a Tangle?
The Tangle is a blockchain substitute developed by IOTA that uses directed acyclic graphs which only build in one direction, with no repetitions, and is quantum-computing resistant. IOTA technology is built on a new sort of DLT rather than the classic blockchain architecture.
It was founded by the IOTA Foundation, a non-profit organization based in Germany. The objective of the IOTA Foundation is to aid in the creation and standardization of the latest DLTs, such as the Tangle.
Reason Behind the Development of the Tangle
Because of the architectural restrictions of existing blockchain systems for specific applications, developers created virtual currency equivalents that could be utilized for a variety of reasons. IOTA Tangle was created to facilitate fee-free microtransactions for the increasing ecosystem of IoT devices.
IoT devices are network-enabled devices like smart appliances, home security systems, computer peripherals, wearable technologies, routers, smart speaker devices with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and near-field communication capabilities (NFC).
Tangle authenticates transactions on a distributed ledger using a proof-of-work (PoW) approach. Tangle's PoW system is comparable to bitcoin's; however, it consumes less energy and takes lesser time to complete. Tangle's architecture's interconnection does not necessitate entire ledger verification.
Rather, all parties verify at the same time, reducing the time and energy required to execute transactions. Furthermore, Tangle's verification procedure claims to prevent repeated transactions, which would result in double-spending.
The technology, nevertheless, proved unable to protect against such a big, coordinated onslaught. Iota created the function of "Coordinator" to protect against such a type of attack. The Coordinator program was managed by the Iota Foundation. Tangle is characterized as the blockchain technology's heir in IOTA's whitepaper.
The Benefits of Tangle
Another advantage of Tangle technology is its low operational costs. For blockchain-based cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin, a transaction fee is paid for all network transactions, regardless of the transaction value.
There are still no transaction fees since Tangle's transaction storing, and processing method do not require miners. As the frequency of small-sized micropayments (payments involving fractional amounts) grows in the coming years, transaction costs will make the usage of blockchain-based cryptocurrencies for such payments problematic.
The challenge of bitcoin dust has already arisen as a result of high transaction fees. Bitcoin dust is the small quantity of bitcoin that remains unspent in a transaction because its value is less than the minimum limit of a valid transaction. As a result, the transaction cannot be processed, trapping a little quantity of bitcoin in a wallet or some address.
