SIM Swap

What Is a SIM Swap?

A SIM swap is a criminal attack that attacks vulnerable points in two-factor authentication (2FA) systems. Two-factor authentication (2FA) systems are used in many applications as they offer additional security for social media, banking, or other online accounts.

SIM swap attacks involve cybercriminals interfering with the target’s mobile phone provider services. The attackers access the victim’s data and transfer their phone number to a new SIM card that they have access to. Once that is done, they access the targets' emails and other logins and change whatever information suits them. This could be anything like login IDs, and banking information.

A SIM swap is critical because the attackers gain access to the victim’s SIM, which is used for almost all security verifications. The criminals can get access to their cryptocurrency information, wallet details, and access keys if the victim happens to be a cryptocurrency investor,

SIM Swap Threats

SIM swaps are a headache for digital investors because they are especially vulnerable. Moreover, since 2-factor authentication is almost ubiquitous in its applications, it is worrying how easily SIM swap attacks can be accomplished.

An attacker just needs the target’s mobile carrier number to be able to port it to a new phone number. This is done in several ways, all of which are easy. One way is by carrying out a phishing attack on the victim, and another is by getting details about the victim from data dumps.

A study by Princeton University in January 2020 showed that 39 out of 50 attempts to execute SIM Swaps were successful. A 15-year-old high school student was able to perform a SIM swap on a cryptocurrency entrepreneur. This crime had

A 15-year-old school student from New York was able to accomplish a SIM swap attack on a cryptocurrency entrepreneur. This cybercrime had profound repercussions as the attacker was able to steal digital assets worth $ 24 million. In addition, Europol could trace a criminal ring that made 100 attacks like this one. The resulting losses were about $ 3.7 million.
