Pump & Dump Scheme

A pump and dump is a scheme to manipulate the price of a stock or other security by buying it in significant quantities, then selling it at an artificially high price.

What Is a Pump & Dump Scheme?

It is to manipulate the price of a stock or other security by buying it in significant quantities, then selling it at an artificially high price. The goal is to create a false impression of market demand to drive the price so the perpetrators can sell their holdings at a profit.

Pump and dump schemes are illegal, and those who engage in them are subject to heavy fines. They are also against the rules of most stock exchanges. The term "pump and dump" can also be used more broadly to refer to any situation in which certain people inflate the price of an asset, then sell it off at an artificially high price.

Pump and dump schemes are relatively easy to carry out in markets with low liquidity, where a small number of trades can significantly impact the price. Cryptocurrencies are often targeted by pump and dumpers due to their high volatility and inferior liquidity.

Pumps and dumps can also be carried out using other assets, such as real estate or art. If you're considering investing in a pump and dump, do your research first and be aware of the risks involved.

Red Flags for Pump and Dump

Pump and dumps can be hard to spot, but there are some red flags you can look for:

  1. A sudden, dramatic increase in price followed by a sudden, dramatic decrease in price. This is called a "pump and dump."

  2. Many people buy a coin all at once. This can signify that someone is trying to pump the price up.

  3. People are talking more about a coin on social media or online forums than usual. This can signify that someone is trying to pump the price up.

  4. Promises of easy money or get-rich-quick schemes. Be wary of anyone promising you easy money, especially if they ask you to buy a coin.

If any of these events occur, be careful! Pumps and dumps can be dangerous for investors because the price can drop suddenly, leaving you with losses.
