On-Ledger Currency
What Is an On-Ledger Currency?
It is a cryptocurrency that is both issued and utilized on the blockchain ledger, similar to Bitcoin. An on-ledger currency is one that resides on a blockchain. All cryptocurrencies must use a distributed ledger (a unique copy of the same information) that all members share. On-ledger currencies have the capability to outperform off-ledger currencies or fiat money.
They are typically open, transparent (display transactions and balances for all to see), pseudo-anonymous (no direct user recognition), demand the constant and incentivized provision of computational resources (or any other consensus mechanism requirements) to sustain form/function, are impossible to counterfeit, and are decentralized. They are also stored within digital wallets.
Understanding the Concept of an On-ledger Currency Through an Example
Bitcoin is the earliest and most well-known case of an on-ledger currency. However, there are many others. An on-ledger currency is significant in that no single person or group of people with sufficient influence may change its specifications. This implies that on-ledger money must normally be decentralized.
They are classed based on their supply, whether public or private database, the consensus technique employed, the community, the level of usage, liquidity, emission rate, wallet support, and other characteristics. Because of the open-source nature of blockchain programming, on-ledger money can also be forked and used to launch a brand-new on-ledger currency with changing settings.
