Instamine

What is Instamine?

An Instamine happens when a sizeable quantity of cryptocurrency tokens is created simultaneously. The tokens are developed as a solitary, substantial batch instead of the routine mining process. Naturally, when a token is subject to Instamine, its supply is augmented considerably.

Instamine may be initiated as an incentive for users before an initial public offering takes place, although it can shrink the price if repeated later. Usually, a scheduled release of tokens is planned, and most cryptocurrencies are launched on a consensus protocol like proof-of-work (PoW).

The knock-on effect of Instamine is that it becomes easier to create tokens for a specific cryptocurrency in a given period, which could lead to lopsided dissemination of tokens among early users. Of course, Instamine is an advantage for those who are involved in the primary stage of a cryptocurrency's launch.

Example of instamine

An excellent example of what Instamine looks like is what happened when Dash was released. Generally, an algorithm is meant to adjust the difficulty level of mining when a token is launched. However, in this case, the algorithm was defective, which meant things went awry.

Roughly two million Dash tokens were issued in the first two days after its launch, representing fifteen percent of Dash tokens' total supply. The repercussions of this defect were that investors became unsettled and sold their tokens at lower prices across different exchanges. Fortunately, single, large-scale dumping did not materialize, which is why the damage done was negligible.

Downside of instamine

Given the potential consequences of instamine, it has attracted widespread condemnation. First and foremost, critics state that instamine can be a breeding ground for fraudulent activity, and scams can occur during the exercise.

Of course, any unfair business practice of this sort is frowned upon. The simplest example will be if a group of investors colludes and purchase a significant portion of the tokens that are available through instamine and then sell these tokens immediately for a hefty profit. Such activity would be unjust.

Instamine commonly occurs when an initial coin offering (ICO) occurs, which is why the latter has also drawn the ire of critics. In the aftermath of an ICO, a token holder can dump their tokens for a higher price when the demand is exceptionally high. Such an action would adversely affect the market condition for the cryptocurrency involved.

Instamine versus premining

Like several other terms in cryptocurrency, instamine is often used interchangeably with premining. However, they may be similar, but they aren't homogenous. For instance, if a token is instamined, it may be mined immediately after its launch because of a fault in the programming. On the other hand, Premining tokens are different because they are generated before the launch occurs.

The vast majority of cryptocurrencies are premined to a certain extent by developers trying to preserve a share of the token's supply when it is launched. Unfortunately, it can be challenging to determine whether a cryptocurrency has been instamined or premined because there is considerable hype surrounding a launch. Scammers are seeking such opportunities to pounce on any issues in mining protocols.
