Distributed Network

What Is a Distributed Network?

Distributed Network is a network in which data and applications rely on several sources rather than a single place. Data, computing activities, and applications are expanded across several machines in a distributed network, which communicates with and relies on one another.

Distributed networks are created to disperse labor and share resources. In addition, distributed networking can help eliminate or reduce computer processes' bottlenecks.

They are a very efficient way of exchanging resources – in most circumstances, expanding a network will be more efficient than increasing the hardware capabilities of individual nodes on a smaller network. Furthermore, distributed networking allows far better levels of fault tolerance, which rise with network scale.

Further Exploring the Concept of a Distributed Network

There are various sorts of distributed networks based on numerous types of computing. For example, client/server distributed networking is the foundation of the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP), on which the web is based. A distributed network can also be described as decentralized.

In these cases, every node (computer) in the network can be utilized for any task required by any other node, leveraging idle computing power. For example, blockchain technology is built on decentralized distributed networking.

Decentralized distributed networking enables the operation of blockchains, which rely on data dissemination and computing power mutualization. This type of networking also offers significant advantages to people wanting anonymity, which is a critical component of cryptocurrency and blockchain ventures.

Many consider these networks to be the next frontier for the web, serving as the foundation for initiatives such as the Ethereum DApp ecosystem and many other critical components of the future Web3 landscape. However, these networks are becoming more prominent among large enterprises and organizations who want to set up cloud computing or data sharing solutions.

A Real World Example of a Distributed Network

Amazon (AMZN) has also expanded its distribution network, constructing massive robotically-controlled warehouses worldwide and running its own freight trucks fleets and cargo planes.

Amazon has even contemplated utilizing self-driving drones to deliver items to clients, which would be a first in goods distribution. In addition, Amazon is a big global retailer; therefore, its distribution network extends across several countries.

Amazon owns 1,215 distribution centers in 21 countries as of July 2020. Amazon's distribution network is divided into prime hubs, fulfillment centers, inbound and outbound sortation centers, and delivery stations.
