Bid Price

What is the bid price?

The bid price is the highest price a buyer is willing to pay for an asset, security, or cryptocurrency at any given time, and this price reflects the level of demand for that asset.

The concept of the bid price

The bid price refers to the price buyers are willing to pay for an asset, it is the opposite of the ask price, which is the price sellers are willing to accept. The relationship between these two prices reflects the state of supply and demand for the traded asset, whether it is a cryptocurrency, a stock, or any security. The bid price is determined based on the number of market participants who have placed buy orders on the order book, these may be individual traders, institutions, or market makers. Bid prices are continuously updated as orders are placed, canceled, and executed.

Why is the bid price important to traders and investors?

The bid price represents an exit point for investors, and it can also be considered an indicator of market health. High demand indicates genuine buying support behind the asset, whereas weak demand, where buy orders are few and spread across multiple price levels, declining as the price approaches, indicates that demand is below what is required. For this reason, experienced investors and traders monitor the entire order book rather than relying solely on the highest bid in the book, especially before making large purchase decisions that could affect their ability to exit later.

Example of a bid price

Ahmed wants to buy the cryptocurrency ABC, which is trading between $10 and $15, but he does not want to pay more than $13 for it. So, he places a buy order for when the price reaches $13, making that his bid price.

Related term: the "order book" is a real-time list displaying all pending buy and sell orders for a given asset. It reflects supply and demand by showing the number of units of the asset that traders wish to buy or sell, along with the prices at which these transactions are taking place.
