What is an atomic swap?

An atomic swap is a process of exchanging two cryptocurrencies using a smart contract. This process is also known as "cross-chain atomic swap" and allows separate users to trade different cryptocurrencies, even if they operate on two different blockchains.

At its core, the concept of atomic swaps involves exchanging one cryptocurrency for another across different blockchains without the need for intermediaries. The term "atomic" refers to the idea that the exchange either happens entirely or not at all, ensuring that neither party to the exchange suffers a loss.

How do atomic swaps work?

To explain the atomic swap process, let's take an example to illustrate how it works: Ahmed owns bitcoin, while Abdullah owns litecoin, and they want to make an exchange between them. Ahmed begins the process by creating an HTLC contract into which he deposits the bitcoin and generates a secret hash, which he sends to Abdullah so that Abdullah can verify the security of the bitcoin without being able to use it. Abdullah then creates a similar HTLC contract on the Litecoin network and deposits the litecoin into it using the same hash. Ahmed then uses the secret hash to unlock the contract and receive the litecoin, which automatically reveals the secret hash to Abdullah so he can use it to unlock Ahmed's contract and receive the bitcoins. In this way, the exchange between the two parties is completed without the need for an intermediary.
