What Is Delegated Proof-of-Stake (DPoS)?

Delegated Proof-of-Stake (DPoS) is a consensus technique that is an alternative to Proof-of-Stake and Proof-of-Work. Proof-of-Stake (PoS) techniques have emerged in recent years in reaction to the perceived challenges and constraints associated with Proof-of-Work (PoW), precisely the resource-intensive nature of large-scale crypto mining. 

The Difference Between Proof-of-Stake (PoS) And Delegated Proof-of-Stake (DPoS)

There is no mining in a PoS process. Instead, new blocks on the blockchain are validated based on the number of coins staked. Users stake a set quantity of coins, and at random, users with stakes are awarded validation powers for the next fresh block. 

The more coins a user bets, the more likely they will receive validation rights in each round. Aside from lowering the processing expenses of operating the blockchain, PoS systems make a malicious assault far more difficult because the attacker would need to acquire at least 51 percent of the total coins on the chain.

Participants still stake coins in a Delegated Proof-of-Stake (DPoS) system. However, rather than being accountable for validating themselves, stakeholders delegate that job to a delegate, who then works with groups of stakeholders to obtain consensus.

Why Delegated Proof-of-Stake (DPoS) Is Considered Better

DPoS delegates are chosen based on their reputation and apparent trustworthiness. The notion among DPoS supporters is that the system incentivizes good behavior among delegates because the community has all the right to vote them out and replace them at any moment. 

Delegated Proof-of-Stake (DPoS) blockchains are often faster than PoW and PoS blockchains, having a higher transaction rate per second. However, DPoS is still in its infancy and is not widely regarded as safe enough to serve as the foundation of money-transaction blockchains.
