Smart Contract

What Is a Smart Contract?

A smart contract is a chunk of computer code that is built to work as an automated contract. This means that it initiates specific actions after it confirms that pre-set conditions are satisfied.

Smart contracts are frequently used as digital agreements that work in-between cryptocurrency or other digital asset exchanges between two parties. First, the terms of an agreement are set, and the smart contract confirms they are fulfilled. After this confirmation, the assets are exchanged according to the contract.

This means that smart contracts are fundamentally codes that perform a set function after specified conditions are met. The smart contract code usually has "if... then..." statements that initiate fixed actions.

For instance, an e-commerce shop can place a smart contract that confirms that “if payment module has been completed, the order is sent to supply chain for delivery.” This makes online shopping more efficient and less prone to human error.

History of Smart Contracts

Nick Szabo, an American cryptographer, first defined the theory of smart contracts in 1994. This was many years before cryptocurrencies and blockchains were introduced. However, smart contracts have gained popularity due to blockchain and cryptocurrencies.

Applications of Smart Contracts

Smart contracts play a crucial role in blockchain and cryptocurrency transactions. They are especially key in the verification of ERC-20 tokens. The ERC-tokens are frequently issued through Initial Coin Offering (ICO) launches. Smart contracts are beneficial in payment processing and exchanging funds and coins during these sales. Smart contracts also speed up payment processing in decentralized exchanges (DEX) and decentralized applications (DApps).

The financial services industry and fintech are mainly also using smart contracts. The technology helps automate clearing and settlement trades, bond coupon payments, and insurance claim settlements.

Smart contracts are flexible enough to be used in virtually any area that requires funds, digital assets, or any exchange of digital information between two parties. For example, leasing companies use smart contracts to make their lease agreements more effective.

In healthcare, smart contract technology is used to counter data alteration in clinical trials. In addition, smart contracts can be used to implement intellectual property agreements by ascertaining a definitive record of shared ownership rights and distributing all royalties and incomes from intellectual property correspondingly.
