Security Audit

What is A Security Audit?

A security audit is traditionally based on a thorough assessment of any computing application, system, or database to evaluate its security. In the case of blockchains, security audits involve based on the peer review of smart contracts or blockchain code to point out potential bugs or flaws.

Why Perform A Security Audit

Per the traditional definition, a security audit examines IT systems and processes based on preset guidelines. Several standards and guides are in place according to the needs of different businesses. The most generic guide is the Common Criteria for IT Security Evaluation.

Most businesses have security audits to ensure that their IT systems are secure from information leaks, hostile system intrusions, or cyberattacks. Security audits are essential to regulatory compliance as they highlight how a business handles sensitive information like customers' financial records and data.

However, security audits also cover items like physical access to computer servers and information systems and protective measures in place to protect against attacks.

Security audits are one part of the three-pronged security diagnostics approach currently in practice. The other methods used with security audits are vulnerability assessments and penetration tests (“pen test”). A full-scale security audit will usually also include pen tests and vulnerability assessments.

Security audits are usually more precise and focus on a specific area, while vulnerability assessments are more general. Penetration tests are more aggressive as they simulate attacks to assess the weaknesses and strengths of a system.

Some companies hire white-hat hackers to perform authorized cyberattacks. Many businesses also offer rewards through their Bug Bounty programs.

Security Audits and Cryptocurrency

A security audit is a careful investigation and analysis of a smart contract’s code that interacts with a cryptocurrency or blockchain. This is done to uncover coding errors, problems, and security weaknesses.

This helps to implement improvements and solutions to fix the problems. Generally, security contract audits are needed because many cryptocurrencies and blockchain transactions deal with financial or other valuable items.

Such audits are complicated as smart contracts often interact with each other, and any interactions with third-party systems can make the system susceptible to attacks.

The auditors' recommendations are shared with the project team, and their responding actions are noted in the final audit report.

A security auditor’s report is seen as a mark of authenticity and integrity for a project. For this reason, most crypto teams are eager to get a security audit done to win user confidence and improve the project’s standing.
