What Is the Derivatives Market?

The Derivatives Market is a public marketplace for derivatives, instruments formed from other types of cryptocurrency assets, such as futures contracts or options. Derivatives are financial instruments that emanate their value from an underlying asset, such as a cryptocurrency, fiat money, or commodity. Traders in derivatives might speculate on the potential price of the underlying asset or hedge risk by betting on it.

Types of Derivative Markets

There usually are two types of derivatives contracts available in a derivatives market. Options provide people the right but not the obligation to acquire or sell an underlying asset at a predetermined price. Futures imply that the transaction must take place on the expiry date. 

Forwards and swaps are two more common derivative kinds, although they are unregulated and thus not traded on regulated exchanges. Forwards are non-standardized and uncontrolled futures contracts, whereas swaps are financial liabilities exchange contracts.

Example of Derivative Markets

Many of the top cryptocurrency exchanges are also derivatives markets. Indeed, some believe that the expansion of derivatives is a critical prerequisite for the widespread adoption of cryptocurrencies. 

The Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE2017 )'s launch of Bitcoin futures was a significant illustration of this, with institutional investors now allowed to trade crypto derivatives – notably, without having to hold the underlying commodity. However, derivatives markets involve significant dangers, which can be systemic, as seen in the financial crisis caused by the collapse of derivatives. 

Derivatives markets in the cryptocurrency have been subjected to numerous regulatory crackdowns. For example, the Financial Services Authority of the United Kingdom declared in October 2020 that the sale of crypto futures to retail investors would be prohibited, citing the unpredictability of the underlying assets and the potential of cybercrime in crypto.
