Sharding
What is Sharding?
Sharding is a procedure in which a blockchain is split into parts to allow parallel processing. This is done by separating the database in a way that will enable parallel processing. The separated parts contain status and transaction history to make this possible.
Sharding is a scaling approach that enables splitting blockchain states into partitions containing status and transaction history so that each shard can be processed in parallel.
Sharding is a standard method of increasing database capacity and is frequently used in computing services. It is especially effective in Ethereum as it helps to reduce network congestion and increase the number of transactions processed per second. In addition, the splitting of the blockchain creates new smaller chains called “shards.”
Sharding in for Scalability
The concept is to split the entire Ethereum network into tiny shards, which would have their own smaller sets of account details like balances and smart contracts. This would allow each shard to remain independent and have (faster) processing.
Sharding is amongst the more complex solutions proposed for the scalability problem that has been actually implemented in Ethereum.
Remember that the shard's information is still sharable across nodes. This allows the ledgers to remain decentralized and safe. Everyone on the network can see all the ledger entries and shared information. The shards do not process or store all the information.
This makes sharding a good option for handling the scaling problem as it helps to increase scalability. However, other possibilities of increasing the current database size and capacity mean that Ethereum would be much less accessible, and validators will need more expensive and powerful computers to access the database.
For the shard chains, a validator just has to keep the prime or run data for the shard they are working on compared to the entire network. This helps to speed things up significantly and moderate hardware requirements.
